
Angela Georgina Burdett-Coutts, 1st Baroness Burdett-Coutts
(21 April 1814 – 30 December 1906), born Angela Georgina Burdett, was a nineteenth-century philanthropist, the daughter of Sir Francis Burdett, 5th Baronet and the former Sophia Coutts, daughter of banker Thomas Coutts
The Lodge was consecrated in 1869
The Lodge was consecrated on 23 September 1869 at the Approach Tavern, 47 Approach Road, Victoria Park, Bethnal Green, London (now E2 9LY) by VW Bro John Hervey, Grand Secretary, assisted by a team of eight Grand Officers. Among the 38 guests was RW Bro Col BurdettThe first Master was W Bro James Terry, who was the grandfather of RW Bro James Arthur Terry, after whom the RMBI home at Croydon, James Terry Court, was named.The Lodge was named after the Baroness Burdett-Coutts. Further details of our patroness, that “Great and Gracious Lady” are given in the next section. Her life and works can be found in several books, including two biographies: by Edna Healy “Lady Unknown: Life of Angela Burdett-Coutts” and by Diana Orton “Made of Gold: Biography of Angela Burdett-Coutts”.

Previous Meeting Venues
From 1869 until 1881, the Lodge met six times a year on the third Thursday of September, November, January, March, May and July. In November 1881 it changed its meeting days to Wednesdays. In 1953, to reduce hotel costs, the July meeting was dropped. Then from 1990 the January meeting was dropped. Subsequently, the meeting dates have varied with changes of venue.
After its consecration the Lodge met at the Approach Tavern, Victoria Park, until 17 September 1890.
